I liked the lights at the Whitney so much that I wanted to make a poster out of their image. This was not the original idea. I started working on the poster sometime in the winter of 2008 but forgot about it until now. I was looking at the photoshopped image of the lights, stripped of the brightness and warmth of their glow. I thought of using text to the illuminate the content, so I wrapped them around the remaining core/bulb of light. I needed more text outside the museum’s name so I pretended this was a poster for my own opening (har har). I used my birthday because I don’t want to put a deadline on my success (har har again).
I was streaming The Simpsons when this bad-ass song played as Bart was trying to teach Homer how to ride a bike (motorcycle). It’s called Mayonnaise and Marmalade by NRBQ. It has a Dylanesque, folksy sound combined with some homo-erotic Oedipal imagery.

This construction site is by apartment. I like that it requires a crane to drop red I-beams onto the site. It seems like an L shape building that wraps around a corner building? It might just be two different construction sites next to each other. A lot of the construction around here is reconstruction/gutting but this one looks like it’s being built form scratch. A lot of buildings and no one to live in them. Lower the rent! Take a hit, guy!
So the html play below took me a really long time because I am dumb. Html-wise, it’s really ugly. Every chunk of text change needed a tag. I wanted to mess around with vertical-align and try to control where font was placed. I am such a novice. O god! Chrome and Mozilla render them differently!
